Clapton Lyrics Protested

Eric Clapton, Garbage, X-Files, Lionrock, Beck, Bush...

Women's rights activists against domestic violence were expected to demonstrate outside Eric Clapton's 8 p.m. concert April 16 at the MCI Center in Washington, D.C. to protest the lyrics of "Sick and Tired," a song from his latest album Pilgrim. The composition, co-written by singer-guitarist Clapton and the album's producer-keyboardist Simon Climie, includes lines about ending a relationship with a shotgun ("I may have to blow your brains out, baby / Then you won't bother me no more"). Executive Director of the National Network To End Domestic Violence Donna Edwards said her organization is outraged at the lyrics and that protesters would be informing concert-goers, as they entered the concert, of the nature of the song. Boston activist Stacey Kabat, director of the battered women's shelter Peace At Home, has already asked Clapton to change the lyrics of "Sick and Tired" and give some of the album's profits to violence prevention programs. Clapton spokesperson Ronnie Lippin told the New York Daily News that the song pays homage to the blues and the genre's notoriously violent lyrics.
