Porcupine Tree

The Internet is dead. Long live the art of conversation and letter-writing (see lyrics on the next album for further rant).

SonicHost Let the chat begin. Welcome Steve!

Kinski If you could choose any artists, past or present, to work with, who would you choose?

delerium Francis Bacon, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Neu, Scott Walker, Bill Laswell and Burt Bacharach.

Kinski What were the last three albums you bought/borrowed/stole?

delerium Amon Duul II's Kobe, Muslimgauze's Azzazin and Soundgarden's Down on the Upside.

jjjj Does everyone in England talk about you sounding like Pink Floyd? That's all they do here.

delerium Yes -- usually people who haven't listened properly. When was the last time you heard Pink Floyd using samplers and trance rhythms?

Kinski Loved "Waiting" -- too darn short though! Sounds nothing like Floyd -- that's an easy comparison, like No-Man always being called an '80s-sounding band.

SonicHost What are your tour plans for the U.S.?

delerium There is a show June 29 at Stephens Hall Theatre, Towson State University in Maryland. There may be a show in New York on June 27.

Kinski Will No-Man tour after the release of Wild Opera? If so will you use Richard, Colin and Chris from Porcupine Tree?

delerium No-Man will only tour if the album does reasonably well, because we would have to hire a band to support us, probably not including any Porcupine Tree members. It's possible that we will play it on a future tour -- but on the other hand it's little more than a 10-minute guitar wigout and there's quite a few of them in the set already!

delerium Let me ask you guys a question: which Porcupine Tree track would you most like to hear the band play live on the next tour?

Sluggo "Lick My Love Pump."

delerium Oh yes -- in D minor, the saddest of all keys.

didier Any chance you are you going to re-release the Porcupine Tree cassettes again?

delerium No chance of cassette re-release -- all the material is on either On the Sunday of Life ... or Yellow Hedgerow Dreamscape.

didier Why are the European and U.S. versions of The Sky Moves Sideways different?

delerium Two reasons It was a mistake to leave off "Stars Die" from the European version, and Craig Roseberry at C+S loves interfering with the running order of albums (but I agreed with his ideas on this occasion).

didier What ever happened to PT's song "Men of Wood"?

delerium It's been on the short list for every album (including the next one) since it was written in 1992, but it never seems to fit. It was almost released as a 7-inch single in Holland. Maybe we'll do a limited edition 7-inch sometime soon.

Kinski Still trying to get hold of the new No-Man album, Housewives Hooked on Heroin.

delerium If you have any trouble getting Housewives, here is the lowdown: It is available via mail order from Third Stone Ltd., PO Box 8, Corby, Northants, NN 17 2XZ. It was released on Monday.

Kinski Are you still working with Fish on stuff for his album? Is it just a few tracks or the whole project?

delerium I'm doing a whole album with Fish, production and co-writing. We're working through the summer for an autumn release.

didier The Marillion Fish?

delerium Yes, Marillion Fish (don't laugh).

Kinski Do you use the net at all?

delerium No. Can't see what all the fuss is about. In fact there is a song about it on the next album called "Every Home Is Wired" -- it's awfully cynical, you know me (or maybe you don't).

Kinski Glad you don't use the net -- there's lots of criticism re: Fish (especially from me) on the No-Man page. If you listened to what everyone said you'd never move on.

delerium If you had any idea how difficult it is to make a living as a "professional" musician you would never criticize my choice to work with Fish. Anyway, trust me to make it a good album!

Kinski One of my fave bands, the Comsat Angels, split for that same reason -- no food on the table -- but as fans we do have our opinions, and we buy everything you release. We just like to moan!

delerium I can see that Fish is not the flavor of the month, but you have to trust me that the album he makes with me will be good. I have heard his last few and they are very middle of the road, but this one will kick butt!

didier Which of your own songs do you like the most?

delerium Let me see, I like "Sever" and "Every Home Is Wired" best at the moment. Those tracks are on the next album. As regards old ones, I love all of side three of On the Sunday of Life ... and "Fadeaway" the best. The last album is my least favorite.

A new label through Delerium, called Chromatic, is releasing Porcupine Tree-related music on vinyl-only limited editions of 500-1000. Each release is on different-colored vinyl and identified by its color. The first two are the IEM album and Spiral Circus, a live album from 1993. The IEM album will be out in July and they have almost sold out already on pre-orders alone, so better be quick! Spiral Circus should be out the following month.
