Like Ice Cube before him, Vin Diesel resigned from his position as a

tough guy to take on the less glamorous job of babysitter, and was crowned

king of the box office for it.

"The Pacifier" bowed at #1 this week with more than $30.2 million, according

to early estimates. The comedy, which finds "The Chronicles of Riddick" star playing a Navy SEAL forced to protect the five unruly children of an assassinated

scientist, beat the opening weekend pull of Ice Cube's babysitting film, "Are

We There Yet?," by more than $10 million.

"Be Cool" got a chilly response from moviegoers, bowing at #2 with just

$23.5 million. In the film, which reunites audiences with "Get Shorty" star

Chili Palmer (John Travolta), Palmer ditches his job as a Hollywood movie

producer to take a gig promoting a fledgling singer (Christina Milian). The

film also stars Uma Thurman as Palmer's love interest, Vince Vaughn, Steven Tyler, Andre 3000 and Cedric the Entertainer.

Will Smith's game seems to be working on moviegoers across the country. "Hitch," the romantic comedy that finds Smith playing a matchmaker and "date doctor" who teaches clients how to land the lady of their dreams, pulled in $12.5 million to land at #3 this week.

First the film's star was spurned by her husband of 18 years, and this week

she fell prey to the fickle taste of moviegoers. "Diary of a Mad Black

Woman," which debuted at #1 last week, fell three spots to #4 with $12

million. The film, which is based on the Tyler Perry play of the same name,

centers on a woman who attempts to rebuild her life after her husband leaves

her, with the help of her pot-smoking grandmother (played by Perry).

A slew of Oscar wins proved lucrative for "Million Dollar Baby," which was

the only film to rise a spot in the top 10. In its 12th week in theaters, the film about an aspiring female boxer (Hilary Swank) and her reluctant coach (Clint Eastwood) moved up from #6 to #5 and took in more than $8.5 million.

After just three weeks in theaters, "Constantine," about a man who

works with forces from heaven and hell to solve the mystery of a woman's suicide, crossed over to the dark side of the box-office top 10, falling from #3 to #6 with more than $6 million.

Rounding out this week's top 10 are "Cursed," which falls from #4 to #7 with

more than $3.8 million; "Man of the House," which drops from #5 to #8 with

$3.5 million; "Because of Winn-Dixie," which slides from #7 to #9 with more

than $3.4 million; and "The Jacket," the Warner Independent film that stars

Adrien Brody as a military veteran who foresees his own death while locked

in an asylum, which debuts at #10 with $2.7 million.

Overall, ticket sales were down from the corresponding weekend last year.

Next week, look for "Robots" to debut in the box-office top 10. Also

hitting theaters is "The Upside of Anger," which stars Erika

Christensen, Keri Russell and Evan Rachel Wood.
