'Smallville' star rumored to be playing Superman on the big screen.

"Smallville" star Tom Welling told reporters at Sunday's Teen Choice Awards that he's signed on for a movie but is not allowed to discuss it, fueling rumors that he will star in "X-Men" director Bryan Singer's new Superman movie. "I'm sworn to secrecy," Welling said with a smile. "It's too early." A spokesperson for Warner Bros. said the role has not yet been cast. Welling, in the meantime, will continue playing Clark Kent on the small screen. "We have a couple new characters [this season]," he said. "Lois Lane will be visiting Smallville, which keeps things interesting for Clark. ... And Clark isn't necessarily earthbound this season." ...

Meanwhile, 20th Century Fox has terminated its two-year deal with Singer because of the director's decision to take on "Superman," which is owned by Warner Bros. Singer and the studio had been in discussions for a third "X-Men" movie, but a deal was never finalized. ... In other comic movie news, "Alien" co-creator Ronald Shusett has optioned the film rights to "Megacity," a new comic following an elite team of soldiers in the future. Shusett, who also worked as a producer and writer on "Total Recall," discovered "Megacity" at the recent Comic-Con comic book convention in San Diego. ... Despite disappointing box-office figures for "Catwoman," Halle Berry has told reporters overseas that she hopes to make a sequel. The actress, or at least her voice, will next appear in the animated "Robots." ...

The Rock (a.k.a. Dwayne Johnson) will star in "Gridiron Gang," a drama based on a true story about a counselor at a juvenile detention center who helps his teenagers gain confidence by starting a football team. ... Julia Roberts is executive-producing the WB's first made-for-TV movie, "Samantha: An American Girl Holiday," premiering November 23. Based on the popular "American Girl" dolls, the movie will star AnnaSophia Robb, the 10-year-old actress who is taking on Violet in Tim Burton's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" remake. She recently shot "Because of Winn-Dixie" with Jeff Daniels and Dave Matthews. ... Billy Bob Thornton has signed on to play the title character in "Mr. Woodcock," a comedy about a young man who returns to his hometown to stop his single mother from marrying his widely despised high school gym teacher. Thornton just finished another high school movie, the Texas football drama "Friday Night Lights." ...

"Spy Kids" and "Sleepover" star Alexa Vega will follow up the upcoming suicide drama "State's Evidence" with another serious role. "It's called 'Walkout' and I play a Latina girl," she said. "It's very different from the other stuff I've done. ... This girl, she starts riots and walkouts at all these schools [to fight] for Latina rights. She's not so much rebellious, she's actually the smartest one in her school. She goes to a public school where it's mostly the Latin American community and nobody respects them and they get this bad name." ... Ewan McGregor will play a harvested human attempting to escape the facility where he's being kept in the upcoming "The Island." Michael Bay ("Armageddon," "Pearl Harbor") will direct when shooting starts in the fall. ... Guy Pearce ("Memento") has signed on to star in "The Proposition," a historic drama surrounding a 19th century Australian family. Australian rocker Nick Cave wrote the script. ...

Rob Reiner ("When Harry Met Sally ...") has replaced rookie director Ted Griffin on an as-yet-untitled romantic comedy starring Jennifer Aniston as a woman who discovers her grandmother (Shirley MacLaine) was the basis for the character of Mrs. Robinson in the 1967 movie "The Graduate." Production on the movie, which also stars Mark Ruffalo, Mena Suvari and Kevin Costner, had shut down for a week over complaints about Griffin's guidance. Griffin, who wrote the script, also penned "Ocean's Eleven" and "Matchstick Men." ... Wes Craven, whose "Cursed" with Christina Ricci and Shannon Elizabeth is due in October, will next helm the airplane thriller "Red Eye." The movie, which has not been cast, centers on woman held captive by a fellow passenger who threatens to kill her father unless she arranges the assassination of a wealthy businessman. ...
