3 Doors Down To Set Sail With U.S. Navy

Band performing on overseas naval stations.

3 Doors Down are about to embark on a top-secret mission. They could tell you the specifics, but then they'd have to kill you.

Singer Brad Arnold, bassist Todd Harrell and guitarists Matt Roberts and Chris Henderson will ship out in early October to perform six shows for overseas U.S. Navy personnel and their families, according to the band's manager. The group is set to play naval stations in Rota, Spain; Sigonella, Italy; Naples, Italy; and two other locations that, along with the dates for all the shows, remain confidential by the Navy.

Another concert will take place aboard an aircraft carrier positioned in the middle of the Mediterranean. In addition to the excitement that comes with rocking out on what is essentially a floating, self-contained city, Arnold is looking forward to one particular once-in-a-lifetime perk.

"We get to ride anything we want," he enthused. "I'm flying in an F-18 or whatever it is that they have on board. I'm gonna take me a barf bag, and I'm goin'. I wanna do three things: I wanna go straight up, straight down and I wanna do a barrel roll."

At the shows, 3 Doors Down will also be treating the sailors to a new song to which civilian fans won't be privy. "Not Be Forgotten," a tune the group wrote in response to the September 11 attacks, won't appear on their second album, Away From the Sun, due November 12 (see [article id="1453811"]"3 Doors Down Singer Enthuses About Food, Fans And New LP"[/article]), because they don't want their fans to misappropriate its meaning, but the band feels it might give the Navy a little encouragement.

"We're not going to put it on the record because we don't want to instigate any [violence] like that against people in this country," Arnold explained. "We're not promoting violence against people of Middle Eastern decent that have nothing to do with [September 11], but at the same time, we wrote a song that's basically about going over there and kicking their ass."
