Nelly Furtado To Kick Off Headlining Tour

Singer launches outing January 28 in Victoria, British Columbia.

Much buzzed-about newcomer Nelly Furtado will continue burning in the spotlight in

2002.

Furtado will launch her first headlining outing — the Burn

in the Spotlight Tour — on January 28 in Victoria, British Columbia, her

DreamWorks Records spokesperson said Monday (December 10).

The trek is expected to go through April, though only the first 10 dates

have been announced. Furtado still has five dates left — all radio station

holiday shows — on her relentless tour schedule from this year.

Labelmates Citizen Cope, the eclectic rock project founded by Clarence

Greenwood, will open for Furtado beginning January 30. Their major label

debut album is due January 29.

Furtado will continue to promote her breakthrough LP, Whoa, Nelly!, which

has sold 1.6 million copies in the U.S., according to SoundScan. The Canadian-

born singer of Portuguese decent recently released her third single, "... On

the Radio (Remember the Days)." Hype Williams directed its accompanying

video.

"It's a tribute to suburban hip-hop culture," Furtado said of the clip

backstage at last week's My VH1 Music Awards. "It takes me back to how I grew up."

Furtado's performance of "Turn Off the Light" at the ceremony featured a

massive party set complete with a real sport utility vehicle. "This was my

first major performance on an awards show, so we tried to do it right," she

said.

After Furtado wraps the Burn in the Spotlight Tour in April, she will begin

recording her second album, for which she has already written several songs

(see [article id="1449280"]"Nelly Furtado Hatching Follow-Up To Whoa, Nelly!"[/article]). Furtado has also recorded

with Paul Oakenfold for his upcoming album, and will contribute vocals to the track "Fine Line" on Shake It Off, the debut album from Jarvis Church, one-half of

the Furtado production team Track & Field, according to RCA Records. Other guests on Jarvis' album include George Clinton on "Suspicion" and Esthero on "Run for Your Life."
