Rattle, Bartoli Among Classical Grammy Nominees

Emerson Quartet's Shostakovich recording received two nominations.

Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic, the "Appalachian Trio" of Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer and Mark O'Connor, and mezzo soprano Cecilia Bartoli were among the classical nominees for the 43rd Annual Grammy Awards, which were announced Wednesday (January 3) by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS).

Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic's version of Mahler's tenth symphony was included in the Best Classical Album category, along with pianist Murray Perahia's Goldberg Variations; a Chopin set by pianist Evgeny Kissin; a CD of Hadyn piano concerti by pianist Leif Ove Andsnes; and the Emerson String Quartet's recording of Shostakovich's quartets (which received a second nomination in the Best Chamber Music category).

One of the year's biggest selling classical CDs, Appalachian Journey, by the trio of Ma/Meyer/O'Connor was nominated for Best Classical Crossover Album, along with sets from The King's Singers, pianist Chick Corea, the duo of pianist Dave Grusin and guitarist Lee Ritenour and bass-baritone Bryn Terfel's collection of Welsh traditional music.

In addition to the nomination of Bartoli, others in the Best Classical Vocal Performance categories went to baritones Matthias Goerne and Thomas Quasthoff, mezzo soprano Anne Sofie von Otter and soprano María Bayo.

Nominees for Best Opera Recording included Berg's Wozzeck (Ingo Metzmacher, Angela Denoke and Bo Skovhus with the Philharmonia Staatsorch., Hamburg; EMI Classics); Britten's Billy Budd (Richard Hickox, Simon Keenlyside, Philip Langridge and John Tomlinson with the London Symphony Orchestra; Chandos); Busoni's Doktor Faust (Kent Nagano, Kim Begley, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and others with the Orchestre de l'Opéra National de Lyon; Erato); Prokofiev's Semyon Kotko (Valery Gergiev, Lyudmila Filatova, Viktor Lutsiuk and Olga Savova with the Kirov Orchestra; Philips) and Rameau's Dardanus (Marc Minkowski, John Mark Ainsley, Véronique Gens and others with Les Musiciens du Louvre; Archiv Produktion).

In the Best Classical Contemporary Composition category (a composer's award for a work created within the last 25 years, and released for the first time during the eligibility year) nominations went to George Crumb's Star-Child; Heiner Goebbels' Surrogate Cities (Suite For Sampler & Orch.; The Horation-Three Songs, Etc.; Nicholas Maw's Violin Concerto; Ned Rorem's Evidence of Things Not Seen; and Rodion Shchedrin's Concerto Cantabile.

Nominations are based on recordings released during the Grammy eligibility year of October 1, 1999 through September 30, 2000. More or less than 5 nominations in a category are the result of ties.
