April 22 [14:30 EST] -- The Verve Pipe is currently enjoying a long spurt of success with "The Freshmen," the third single off last year's "Villains" album. "The Freshmen" holds steady at number two on this week's Modern Rock Tracks chart from "Billboard," and remains in MTV's Buzz Bin.

Originally written five years ago, "The Freshmen" has been through many revisions, including one that ended up on the Jerry Harrison produced album.

The hit single was actually remixed by Black Crowes producer Jack Joseph Pweeg, who Verve Pipe keyboardist Doug Corella says allowed the band to see the song in yet another light.

We picked Pweeg to work on this new remix right now with us out in L.A.," Corella told MTV News. "I think the hardest thing about the song is that we've had so many different arrangements of it. We weren't really satisfied with trying to get the song to its peak. So, we wanted to try it again, and we chose Jack, and we went in and [article id="1451591"]it was great working with Jack, just 'cause he really tore the song apart, dissected it down to its bare bones and said, 'This is what works. The Verve Pipe, along with Sponge and Thin Lizard will play Michigan State University Auditorium Tuesday.
