Savage Garden Tapped For Closing Olympic Ceremony

Australian popmaker Savage Garden is currently in the midst of an extensive North American summer tour, but the duo has already lined up an Olympic-size homecoming gig for when the tour wraps.

The duo, who is performing in support of its second album, "Affirmation," has been tapped to perform the record's title track during the closing ceremony of the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, on October 1.

Both the opening and closing ceremonies will be held at the newly constructed Olympic Stadium at Sydney's Olympic Park, with the opening ceremony slated for September 15, although several preliminary events will actually take place starting on September 13.

So far, none of the other artists confirmed to play the opening ceremony quite have the contemporary pop luster of Savage Garden; they include Olivia Newton-John, Human Nature, and Tina Arena.

Savage Garden, which has sold more than 2.3 million copies of "Affirmation" in the

U.S. alone, will play the Bethlehem Musikfest in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday (see [article id="1433885"]"Savage Garden Kicks Off North American Tour"[/article]).
