Police Revisit Early Days

June 23 [14:00 EDT] -- Twenty years after forming, and 13 years after breaking up, the Police are revisited with the impending release of their earliest work, and a tribute album to the band's reggae-pop sound.

The band's pre-Police days will be unearthed when the group's work under the name Strontium 90 is released on July 29. While Sting, Stewart Copeland, and Andy Summers only played one show as Strontium 90 before becoming the Police, the group did record an armload of melodic hard core punk tunes that includes the first version of "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic.

The release, titled "Police Academy," includes both studio tracks and live recordings from the band's only performance on May 28, 1976.

Meanwhile, Maxi Priest, Aswad, and a slew of contemporary reggae artists are paying homage to the Police on "Reggatta Mondatta," which is also due on July 29. Maxi Priest takes on "Message in a Bottle," Aswad reworks "Sprits in the Material World," Steel Pulse

tackles "Can't Stand Losing You." Shinehead, Los Pericos, Betty Wright, Jazz Jamaica, Sheila Hylton, and others also turn up on the album.

Sting himself turns up on the album, teaming with Ziggy Marley to cover "One World (Not Three).
