Eddie Vedder Rocks "Cradle" With Susan Sarandon

In what must be one of the more unlikely vocal pairings in recent years, Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder has recorded a duet with Oscar-winning actress Susan Sarandon for the soundtrack to "Cradle Will Rock," a film written and directed by Sarandon's beau, Tim Robbins.

David Robbins, who is co-executive producing the soundtrack with his brother Tim, told MTV News that Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon was considered for the track, though it was Vedder and Sarandon who eventually recorded the 1930s-style cover of composer Mark Blitzstein's "Croon Spoon" song for the film's end credits.

Polly Jean Harvey has also contributed to another one of the soundtrack songs, singing a cover of Blitzstein's "Nickel Under the Foot.

The "Cradle Will Rock" soundtrack is scheduled to hit stores on December 14. The film, which stars John Cusack and Bill Murray, is based on the true story of famed director Orson Welles' W.P.A. theater and is due to arrive on screens on December 10.

Jam, with former Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron still in tow, remains in a Seattle studio working on its next album with producer Tchad Blake, who also manned the boards for Los Lobos' "This Time" and Soul Coughing's "El Oso.

The group's as-yet-untitled new disc is tentatively set for a spring 2000 release.
