Moby, TLC Top "Village Voice" Pazz & Jop Critics' Poll

Moby, TLC, The Magnetic Fields, and Eminem are among the artists topping this year's edition of "The Village Voice" Pazz & Jop Poll, arguably the most important and prestigious critical poll issued in the U.S.

Techno maestro Moby nabbed the top spot on the Pazz & Jop Poll's list of albums with his newest record, "Play," which will also contend for a Grammy Award next week in the category of Best Alternative Record.

The Magnetic Fields, the Boston-based project of studio whiz Stephin Merritt, was at number two with the triple-disc set, "69 Love Songs," while Beck's "Midnite Vultures," The Flaming Lips' "The Soft Bulletin," and the venerable Tom Waits' "Mule Variations" rounded out the rest of the poll's top five records.

On the single side, Atlanta trio TLC grabbed the top spot with its femme anthem, "No Scrubs," followed by Eminem's "My Name Is," Len's "Steal My Sunshine," Madonna with "Beautiful Stranger," and the Backstreet Boys' "I Want It That Way.

The 1999 edition of "The Village Voice" Pazz & Jop Poll was compiled from a survey of 489 music critics, contributing editors, and writers from such national publications as "Rolling Stone," "Spin," and "Details," as well as other local newspapers and media outlets.

Last year, Lucinda Williams' "Car Wheels On A Gravel Road" was selected as the Pazz & Jop Poll's best album, which was announced shortly after the presentation of the Grammy Awards (see [article id="1435233"]"Lucinda Williams Caps Grammy Win By Topping Critics Poll"[/article]).
