Ben Lee And Kylie Minogue Make "New Romantic" Magic Together

To record a proper cover of a Duran Duran track, apparently all you need is a little inspiration, a little perspiration, and a vast knowledge of video-cliche dance moves from the '80s. Ben Lee and Kylie Minogue make it look that easy, anyway.

As we previously reported (see [article id="1431150"]"Ben Lee And Kylie Minogue Team Up For Duran Duran Cover"[/article]), the dynamic Aussie duo recently took to a studio in New York City to record a version of the pop classic "The Reflex" that will appear on an upcoming Australian tribute album to the godfathers of video rock. What did it take for these two to "get in the mood," so to speak?

[article id="1446885"]"We've managed to create an atmosphere around the studio that's very much carrying on from some of the Duran Duran and other New Romantic kind of atmospheres,"[/article] Lee explained.

[article id="1446885"]"If you hadn't arrived as early as you did, we were gonna

get some eyeliner and a little Lycra,"[/article] Minogue added.

[article id="1446885"]"We've been doing a lot of crawling around on the floor. Is there space? 'Cause we've been doing a lot of this kind of stuff, like looking around and this sort of thing,"[/article] Lee said as he busted some "Hungry Like the Wolf"-inspired moves. [article id="1446885"]"And just to get in the mood each day, and just sort of breathing exercises and things, just to kind of get prepared, especially in vocal takes, a lot of shoulder, different dancing, it's been happening."[/article]

How did the pair come to record this particular Duran-squared favorite?

"Originally there was talk of having 'Girls on Film,'" Minogue revealed.

[article id="1446885"]"No, no, no, oh, there was?"[/article] Ben asked. [article id="1446885"]"Before

'Skin Trade?'"[/article]

[article id="1446885"]"Yeah, yeah... which was taken,"[/article] Kylie explained. [article id="1446885"]"And then, um, we were offered 'Skin Trade.'"[/article]

This particular suggestion did not sit well with Lee at all.

[article id="1446885"]"I made a phone call,"[/article] he began. "I got on the phone down to the boss of EMI Australia, and I said, 'Look, if you want, seriously, the current Prince and Princess of Australian Pop Music to be involved in this, we're gonna need a more substantial track.' I'm serious, man. I said, 'I'll cut your throat.' I said that to him. I was really threatening him, because I think, you know, for a collaboration of this size, of this amount of... I mean, this is something that will capture people, the imagination of generations to come."

[article id="1446885"]"Once [Ben] comes

out of his

shell, he'll be all right,"[/article] Minogue joked. "He's a little quiet in interviews." [RealVideo]

There's no word yet as to whether or not this as-yet-untitled Duran Duran tribute album will be released in the States, but we'll be sure to keep you posted.
