Michael Stipe Hooks Up With Patti Smith, Philip Glass For Michigan Benefit

On Friday at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe joined Patti Smith and composer Philip Glass in a one-off performance to honor the memory of poet Allen Ginsberg, and to benefit the Tibetan Buddhist organization Jewel Heart.

While the three joined forces on an energetic version of Smith's 1988 recording "People Have The Power," the concert also featured the unusual sight of Stipe on acoustic guitar. The R.E.M. frontman previewed about 30 seconds of a track from his band's forthcoming album "Up" entitled [article id="1444896"]"Diminished/I'm Not Over You." [28.8 RealVideo][/article]

Smith's "People Have The Power" was penned by her late husband Fred "Sonic" Smith, guitarist for the seminal '60s proto-punk outfit the MC5, and Patti implored the crowd of 4,000: "Do not forget him, because he did not forget you."
