Dynamite Hack Detonates "Boyz-N-The Hood" Cover

The Austin, Texas-based Dynamite Hack have exploded on the charts with a slacker cover of the Eazy-E penned N.W.A. classic, "Boyz-N-The Hood," the first single from the Hack's debut album, "Superfast," due in stores this week.

Dynamite Hack's "Boyz-N-The Hood" is currently number 18 on alternative radio, according to "R&R," and the group -- composed of guitarist-vocalist Mark Morris, bassist-vocalist Chad Robinson, guitarist Mike Vlahakis, and spanking new drummer Kyle Schneider -- has just headed out on the road for a series of live performances at radio festivals.

Prior to the tour, Hack frontman Mark Morris explained to MTV News how an accidental songwriting exercise led to the band's hilariously over-the-top, white-bread take on "Boyz-N-The Hood.

"Whenever I write a song, I can't ever come up with lyrics right away," Morris said. "I

can actually never ever come up with lyrics. I just sit there and scribble and... I try to be deep and end up being stupid. So when I first write a song, I sing other people's lyrics over it, just trying to find the right melody and cadence and whatnot.

So I happened to be singing ['Boyz-N-The Hood'], and fortune was smiling upon us, because Chad heard it in the next room and came in and was laughing and saying, 'You gotta keep that.'

I was the first fan of the song," Robinson chimed in.

"I was like, 'Shut up, dude. That's stupid, it's gangsta rap,'" Morris continued, "and he was like, 'No, you have to do it.' And then it evolved a little bit. I think the structure was written right there on the spot. I wrote it right there and played it and then the whole thing [came together].

The bass line

was added a little bit later, and then there's a drum part, and the stop was added, but other than that it was done. I just happened to play it just like that the first time, so that's how it happened.

I peed myself when I heard it," Robinson joked, "'cause it was so funny." [RealAudio]
