May 30 [16:00 EDT] -- As of Friday afternoon, Memphis police were searching for singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley, who they believe drowned in the city's downtown harbor.
The 30-year-old Buckley was in Memphis to record the follow up to his 1994 debut effort "Grace," which got rave reviews for Buckley's open ended songs, jazz-influenced singing style, and wide ranging voice.
A friend of Buckley's told police that the singer was wading into Memphis harbor Thursday night when a boat passed nearby. The friend turned to move a portable stereo out of the boat's wake on the shoreline, but when he turned back around, Buckley was gone.
Jeff Buckley's father Tim, also an acclaimed singer-songwriter, died of a drug overdose in 1975.
