Andy Summers, Jeff Beck, Sheryl Crow Win Guitar Awards

Former Police guitarist Andy Summers was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award on Tuesday during the 2000 Orville H. Gibson Guitar Awards, handed out during a luncheon staged at the Hard Rock Café in Los Angeles.

Summers is best known for his guitar work in the hit trio the Police, but since that group dissolved in 1985, Summers has released a dozen solo albums featuring a jazzier, more new age-influenced style.

Last year, Brian Setzer received the Lifetime Achievement Award (see [article id="1429013"]"Brian Setzer, Courtney Love, John Fogerty, Lisa Loeb Honored At 1999 Gibson Guitar Awards"[/article]), an honor which had previously only gone to B.B. King, Emmylou Harris, Vince Gill, and John Fogerty.

Others picking up 2000 Gibson Guitar Awards included perennial fave Jeff Beck and the Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde in the Rock categories, and Lyle Lovett and Sheryl Crow in the Acoustic categories.

Buckcherry's Keith Nelson and Orgy's

Amir Derakh shared the Les Paul Horizon Award for most promising new guitarist, while Limp Bizkit's Sam Rivers and Aimee Mann, who is up for an Oscar for composing "Save Me" for the "Magnolia" soundtrack, were honored for their bass skills.

Proceeds from yesterday's ceremony were donated to the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Foundation, an organization that uses music therapy to help severely autistic children at a clinic based in New York University.
