As a child Vainsmith grew up really interested in art. She loved sketching, painting, and sculpting but too Vain also loved writing and making music. She recalls a few of her art teachers telling her she could become a famous artist back in grade school. "I was in 7th grade when my teacher noticed that I had a book of rough sketches. She looked through all of them and told me that I should have my own section in our school newspaper doing a comic skit every week. I never listened but it sparked a light bulb inside of my mind and proved to me that I really had what it took to be an artist." Smith preferred being behind the scenes and always loved the idea of capturing people in their pure essence. Photography has become a second nature for her as she is able explore many different avenues through images. She has only began shooting seriously as of February 2011.
During her high school years Smith decided to focus more on writing as it was becoming more of an outlet for her. "I didn't have a lot of friends and I wasn't the most popular in high school so instead of trying to fit in, I'd write short stories on my spare time. I never intended on sharing them but a classmate stumbled across one story in particular and asked me if he could read in between classes and I said yes. After he read it, he shared it with a few others and they came up to me asking me why I haven't completed the story and told me that I had a skill as well as a way with words." This led to Vainsmith initially creating a website / blog back in 2009. It was the first time she'd taken writing to another level although she ended up shutting it down to focus more so on her music.
Vainsmith grew up in a pretty diverse city that showed her many aspects of life. It also influenced her musically. She listened to a lot of different genres growing up. Vain recalled the internet actually being an open source to an underground world of artist that she would've never heard on the radio or seen on television. Having that outlet actually changed her outlook on music in general and was initially the drive behind her wanting to pursue being an artist even more. While Smith is heavily influenced by 90's / hip hop artist like Queen Latifah, Nas, A Tribe Called Quest, Salt N Pepa, Wu-Tang Clan, Jay Z & The Fugees she's also influenced by new artist such as J. Cole, Nitty Scott MC, Chilidish Gambino, Amanda Diva, Action Bronson, and Kendrick Lamar. She even recalls The Ruff Ryders album by Eve being the first album she played on repeat non stop. "The first cassette tape that I remember asking my mom to buy was Eve's album. It was a bit vulgar and not age appropriate for my ears at that time but I still loved it. Eve was definitely one of the artist that I truly acknowledged and appreciated then as I still do now."
Vain has a few upcoming projects that will be releasing soon. As of now her EP "The Summer of '87" is available for listen and download on Bandcamp.
