About Ergo We Play
The band has an extremely diverse sound and song writing capability that spans across several genres. For example, if you like pop songs….then EWP has them, if the Indie sound is your thing…..then EWP has that too. However if you are into alternative rock….well stand by, because this band can blister you with the best!!! Their thoughtful lyrics, a non-conformist style and commanding stage presence makes this bands live shows a must to see.
Bands that inspire EWP include Rise Against, Foo Fighters and Fall Out Boy to name a few.
EWP takes life’s lessons they have experienced like the good, the bad and the ugly side of relationships, to create their songs. The band professes not to be highly accomplished musicians, but they are great song writers, have a tight sound and have the ability to connect with their fan base and their struggles with the ups and downs of life.
Ergo We Play members include: Alex Zimmermann (Lead Vocals, Guitar, and Keyboards), Sam Travis (Bass, Vocals), Thomas Detchemendy (Lead Guitar, Vocals) and Chandler Kucera (Drums).
Alex Zimmermann - Band Founder (Lead vocals, guitar and keyboards)
EWPs unique sound and song writing capability has its foundation and origin through the bands founder, Alex Zimmermann. Early on in Alex’s music career, with less than a year of formal guitar lessons, he developed a strong knack for song writing, as early as his 7th and 8th grade years. While in the earlier days of EWP (or Failure 2 Plan as they were called), several members had cycled through the band, but the one of a kind sound and song writing diversity has remained consistent.
In the spring of 2011, eager to expand his song writing passion and take it to the next level, Alex founded EWP to share his songs with others both live and in studio. Alex wanted to demonstrate the quality of his song writing ability by recording some tracks and looked for avenues to share the results with others. Then along came the opportunity to enter his songs and the newly formed band in a national contest called School Jam USA (www.schooljamusa.com ) as noted above. This contest was designed to be a national battle of the bands contest for high school level artists performing original material, no cover songs. This was a pivotal time in Alex’s life, an opportunity to receive validation on the content and quality of his song writing capability through national competition, along with music industry recognition by way of the judging process. Well, it came and with great results! Out of close to 150 bands nationally…..the band received a third place finish, followed by an extraordinary first place win nationally the following year in the 2013 contest!!
Sam Travis (Bass, backup vocals)
Without formal training in music, Sam started off his music career as a self-taught acoustic guitarist. Poetry writing is a staple in Sam’s creativity background, which has resulted in a unique benefit in the song development process for EWP. Sam shifted to bass guitar when he was recruited to join EWP early on. Sam too is prolific in song writing, coupled with his “Word Man” status has made him a great corner stone in EWP.
Thomas Detchemendy (Lead guitar, backup vocals)
We can’t help but say….what a shredder, a guitar riff guru!!!! Thomas is a formally trained guitarist, however never really played in a band before joining EWP in early 2012, taking the band from a 3 piece to a 4 piece full sounding power band. Thomas’s exceptional lead guitar abilities were instantly realized in filling the depth void the band experienced as a 3 piece band. Thomas’s contribution to the band both in song writing and live performances has been substantial, generating riffs and solos that have been so recognized as to garner him the coveted title of “Best Guitar” in the 2013 School Jam USA contest.
Chandler Kucera (drummer)
The youngest and newest member of the band, Chandler joined EWP in late 2012 just a few short months before the January 2013 School Jam contest, following the resignation of the pervious drummer. Chandler was given the tough task of learning all the EWP songs and creating a solid live performance foundation for the band in short order, despite his limited live performance experience. Well he rose to the occasion and performed incredibly well….enabling EWP to achieve the 1st place national win in School Jam USA. Chandler is an extremely hard working, solid drummer, rounding out the bands live performances.
If you examine the music industry today for niches to fill, a question comes up…who is filling the teenage market for bands…..not soloists or even pop stars or boy bands, but Alternative Rock bands that are in fact teenagers themselves??? Yes it’s true there are a lot of Alternative Rock bands on the market today that teenagers love. However, it’s hard to identify any band today whose members are not only teenagers but actually play their instruments live?? What you currently get today are front singer boy bands or pop star soloists with backup seasoned professional musicians performing songs likely written by someone else. So the question is, would a band that has a good sound be more marketable to teenagers or young adults if they were in fact teenagers themselves verses an older band in the same market??? One would likely conclude the fan base would strongly relate to or be attracted to a band of teenagers like themselves! Especially for those fans that are not necessarily typecast to a stereotypical boy band or pop soloist persona, but want something different and new. EWP can fill this niche market that so far is not fully realized.
