During their last year of schooling at Berklee, Dave Sherman (songwriter/vocalist/keyboardist) and Dan Grennes (bassist) began making music together. The duo moved to Nashville to find publishing contracts after spending some time playing around the Boston club scene. While in Nashville the two worked alongside numerous session musicians and formed the band Edison With the Weather (EWTW) just in time to record a debut album, Pop Fictions. Following this album, Sherman and Grennes took EWTW back to New York, where their jazzy style was more at home, and began assembling a new band lineup for a second album. After bringing in drummer Shinya Miyamoto and guitarist Ben Butler, EWTW entered the studio and began work on Off the Cuff, ultimately released in 1996. The album explored the band's style of jazz-rock fusion, yet Sherman and Grennes weren't totally happy with the results so they brought in an old friend from their Berklee days, drummer Andy Sanesi. He had a strong jazz background and brought more of that element to the band. Now a trio comprised of the three Berklee alumni, EWTW entered the studio with esteemed producer Prince E. Strickland and recorded The Big Bang Theory.
