A Shocked Harry Styles Wins Album of The Year At The Grammys

Beyoncé might've been the favorite, but Styles reminds there's 'no such thing as best in music' in his speech

When Harry Styles took home the biggest award at “music’s biggest night” Sunday (February 5), he wanted everyone to know that isn’t why he — or any artist, for that matter — makes music. The “As It Was” singer, who performed earlier in the night and took home Best Pop Vocal Album, appeared surprised when he was also awarded the Grammys’s most coveted award: Album of the Year for Harry’s House.

“I’ve been so, so inspired by every artist in this category with me at a lot of different times in my life,” he said in his acceptance speech, clearly not expecting the accolade. Harry’s House won out against Beyoncé’s Renaissance — still, it was a historic night for Bey, who broke the record for winning the most Grammys ever — as well as Adele’s 30, Lizzo’s Special, Kendrick Lamar’s Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, Bad Bunny’s Un Verano Sin Ti, Mary J. Blige’s Good Morning Gorgeous Deluxe, Brandi Carlile’s In These Silent Days, ABBA’s Voyage, and Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres.

“I listen to everyone in this category when I’m alone,” Styles continued. “I think on nights like tonight, it’s obviously so important for us to remember that there is no such thing as best in music. I don’t think any of us sit in the studio making decisions based on what is gonna get us one of these.”

Before he ended up onstage and handed off his gramophone and then turned over the mic to his collaborators, Kid Harpoon and Tyler Johnson, he added how “really, really kind” this win is. And before he could even make it onto the stage, when his name was called as the winner, he buried his face in his hands out of pure disbelief.

But the person most excited for Harry’s win may be Reina, the great-grandmother super-fan who participated in the Recording Academy’s roundtable throughout the show. Reina explained why she was rooting for Harry above all, and when host Trevor Noah invited her to present the award to her idol herself, she practically squealed. The big hug Harry gave her was the cherry on top. In fact, this interaction might be the most wholesome and joyful thing to come out of this moment in Grammys history.
