2010 doesn't seem like it was that long ago, but you'd be surprised at how different the VMA red (er, white) carpet looked back then. Jelena was only a budding item, Lady Gaga got on stage wearing meat, and the cast of "Jersey Shore" was still happily together. Check out what everyone wore (and did) five years ago on the carpet below!

Katy Perry

Katy Perry hit the VMAs in one of her more subdued looks, wearing a nude dress with black beading and a white ruffle to make sure she was appropriately covered. It is unconfirmed whether Katy won the fight between her and the Moonman.

Ciara

Ciara looked beautiful as ever wearing an ombré feather gown and rocking an up-to-there slit well before Angelina Jolie.

Sean Kingston

The "Beautiful Girls" singer showed up to the white carpet in a much more casual look wearing jeans and a white jacket (maybe to match the carpet?).

Chelsea Handler

The host for the night was comedian Chelsea Handler, who was the first woman to host the show in 16 years (the last time was Roseanne Barr in 1994). Miley Cyrus will be the next woman to host, leading the show this year.

Deadmau5

Deadmau5 appeared on the red carpet in his usual getup of an oversized mouse head and jeans and a T-shirt. The DJ served as the house artist for the show.

Jared Leto

It's safe to say Jared Lato looked slightly different back in 2010 (for one, his hair wasn't lime green). Still, he looked cool AF, as per usual. Some things never change.

Victoria Justice

The then-"Victorious" star kept it simple in a strapless mini-dress and black heels.

Drake

While it may seem like Drake has been around 5ever, his first appearance at the VMAs was in 2010. He performed "Fancy" with Mary J. Blige and Swizz Beats.

Miranda Cosgrove

Back in 2010 Miranda was still a bb on "iCarly." For her first VMAs she wore a blue dress with sparkly lace.

Cast of "Jersey Shore"

A lot has changed for the cast of "Jersey Shore" since 2010. Most of them have traded in their partying days for marriages and kids. But five years ago they were still the wild, GTL-loving reality stars we knew and loved.

Usher and Justin Bieber

Like Drake, 2010 was also the first VMAs for a very tiny Justin Bieber. He showed up on the white carpet with his mentor Usher and performed "Baby" and "Somebody to Love" while rolling up in a red convertible. He hast truly always been a man of style.

Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber

While they weren't dating quite yet Justin, and Selena Gomez hugged it out while on the carpet together. #Jelena4ever

Selena Gomez

While it may have been Justin's big night, it might be safe to say that Selena outshone him (literally) on the carpet, wearing a metallic silver gown that was bejeweled at the top.

Joe Manganiello

Before "Magic Mike" (and "Magic Mike XXL"), Joe Maganiello was just a guy on the VMA white carpet in jeans and a leather jacket.

Kesha

Back when Kesha still used beer as an adhesive for the glitter she covered herself in and used dollar signs in lieu of the letter "s," she wore a fur collared dress to the VMAs and braided her blonde locks into Rapunzel hair.

Cher

Never one to be outdone, Cher showed up to the awards in an ensemble that could give Lady Gaga a run for her money. The then-64 year old icon wore a sheer leotard and above-the-knee leather boots.

Justin Timberlake, Jesse Eisenberg, and Andrew Garfield

The boys from "The Social Network" showed up as a crew to introduce Drake, Mary J. Blige, and Swizz Beats.

Lady Gaga definitely demanded attention with her first look of the night (yes, first) with her elaborate gown and feathered headpiece. For her dates, she brought discharged service men and women to bring awareness to the military's Don't Ask Don't Tell policy. But if that wasn't enough to get people's attention, what she wore next certainly did the trick.

Ah, the meat dress. Probably one of, if not the, most iconic looks in VMA history. The dress, which was made of actual meat, was to bring further attention to the issues of LGBTQ people in the military. Gaga said, "If we don’t stand up for what we believe in and if we don’t fight for our rights, pretty soon we’re going to have as much rights as the meat on our bones. And I am not a piece of meat."
