WTF, Is Maggie Gyllenhaal Is 'Too Old' To Be A Leading Lady?

In a new interview, the actress comes clean about ageism in Hollywood.

Award-winning actress Maggie Gyllenhaal is lovely, talented, and most of all... too old?

At 37, we wouldn't exactly classify the Golden Globe- winner as ancient, but in a new interview with TheWrap Magazine, Gyllenhaal admitted she'd recently lost a role because of her age.

"There are things that are really disappointing about being an actress in Hollywood that surprise me all the time,” she said. “I’m 37 and I was told recently I was too old to play the lover of a man who was 55. It was astonishing to me. It made me feel bad, and then it made me feel angry, and then it made me laugh.”

Um, what?

While we appreciate Gyllenhaal's display of class and her enviable ability to laugh things off, this is seriously wrong for a variety of reasons. As if interesting roles for women in Hollywood weren't hard enough to come by (just ask Anna Kendrick), ageism is a major problem that just won't go away. While 50-something leading men like Brad Pitt and George Clooney remain hot commodities, women of a "certain" age -- and 37 is NOT old, btw -- are shunned.

Seriously, Hollywood -- WTF?!?
