‘Fuller House’ Will Explain Michelle’s Absence With A Nod To Mary-Kate And Ashley
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen broke a lot of hearts when they opted not to reprise their shared role as Michelle Tanner on “Fuller House.”
Once the heartbreak settled in, though, fans were immediately hit with a second overwhelming reaction: How in the hell could the show explain why every major “Full House” player was there except for the littlest Tanner sister?!
We gave Netflix a solid list of ways they could justify Michelle’s absence, but the show has reportedly moved in a different direction — and it’s perfectly tongue-in-cheek.
According to Us Weekly, the characters in “Fuller House” will “mention that Michelle is now living in New York City and working on creating her fashion empire.” That, of course, is a direct nod to the Olsen twins’ real-life careers as NYC-based fashion designers. They head two labels, The Row and Elizabeth and James, and cited their careers as the reason why they couldn’t return for the reboot.
Furthermore, one episode of “Fuller House” will reportedly features character prank-calling Michelle and saying her trademark catchphrase from the original series: “You got it, dude!”
In May, executive producer Robert L. Boyett announced in a supportive statement that the Olsen twins weren’t planning on reprising their role.
“Although Ashley and Mary-Kate will not be a part of ’Fuller House,’ I know how much ’Full House’ has meant to them and they are still very much considered family,” he said. “It has been exciting to see how they have built their professional careers, and I support their choice to focus on their fashion brands and various business endeavors. I appreciate their support and good wishes towards ’Fuller House.'”
Lori Laughlin then confirmed in November that the series had wrapped and the Olsen twins “didn’t come in,” settling any debate about whether or not they'd change their minds.
The series debuts on Netflix in 2016 and centers around D.J. Tanner-Fuller (Candace Cameron Bure), who’s widowed and raising three sons with the help of her sister Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin) and BFF Kimmy (Andrea Barber). Also returning are original series regulars Laughlin, Bob Saget, John Stamos and Dave Coulier.
