'Star Trek Into Darkness' Teaser: Watch Now!
We hope you're hungry, Captain Kirk -- because it sure looks like you're about to feast on humble pie.
Yet another brand-new look at "Star Trek Into Darkness" is now online, just weeks after the [article id="1698421"]first announcement video[/article] hit the web. The new teaser runs just under two minutes but manages to show off the size and scale of what director J.J. Abrams has in mind for his "Star Trek" sequel ... not to mention the extent of the devastation heading toward the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise.
Like the first "Into Darkness" video, the new teaser begins with a monologue. But it's not the nefarious John Harrison (played by "Sherlock" actor Benedict Cumberbatch) doing the talking: it's former Enterprise captain Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood), Kirk's old mentor. Kirk saved Pike's life in the last film, but any residual goodwill is out the window now, based on Pike's firm, borderline caustic words of caution toward the new Enterprise leader.
"There's greatness in you, but not an ounce of humility," Pike tells Kirk. "You think that you can't make mistakes, but there's going to come a moment when you realize you're wrong about that. And then you're going to get yourself and everyone under your command killed."
The talk of Starfleet cadets dying because of Kirk's arrogance comes paired with shots of Kirk's crew: everyone from the romantically linked Spock and Uhura to supporting team members like Sulu, Scotty and Bones. The one we fear for the most is Chekov, now sporting a red shirt -- and anyone even passingly aware of the running red-shirt gag in "Star Trek" lore knows what that fashion choice might represent.
The danger is only heightened when Cumberbatch as Harrison appears in the teaser. He's imprisoned behind a glass wall, presumably aboard the Enterprise, glowering through his cage, his words soaked in venom: "You think you're safe. You are not."
Harrison's words are backed up by deeds, as the teaser goes into full-on action movie mode with space battles aplenty. At one point, a figure races through open space, dodging wreckage and shrapnel with alarming ease; it's unclear if this is one of our heroes, or the deadly Harrison, free-falling with such expertise. Elsewhere, we see explosions erupt throughout the Enterprise, resulting in a piercing scream from a new character played by "Men in Black 3" actress Alice Eve.
The teaser concludes with a scene previously only revealed in the Japanese version of the previous "Into Darkness" video: two hands reaching out at each other, separated only by glass -- an image sure to ring some bells for "Wrath of Khan" veterans.
"Is there anything you would not do for your family?" Cumberbatch's villain coolly asks as the teaser draws to a close.
"Star Trek Into Darkness" sets forth on May 17, 2013.
