Protests In Honor Of Eric Garner Spread From New York City Across The Nation
After the the grand jury's decision not to indict an NYPD officer in the death of Staten Island resident Eric Garner, continuous protests have erupted throughout New York City. Last night's protests shut down the West Side Highway, and tonight's have shut down both the highway and the Brooklyn Bridge.
Protestors continue to use both phrases from Ferguson like "hands up don't shoot" and "we can't breathe" -- a reference to the last words asthma-sufferer Garner spoke while he was in the officer's grasp.
Reportedly, protestors are now heading towards 1 Police Plaza:
According to CNN, police have begun to arrest protestors in Times Square:
An organized "die in" was held at Herald Square (34th & 6th). 11 minutes of silence, one minute for each time Eric Garner said "I can't breathe."
The New York Times reports that the Brooklyn Bridge is shut down in both directions and that Southbound lanes have been closed off on the West Side Highway.
In Staten Island, many continue to gather at the spot where Garner died to both memorialize him and protest the injustice they feel has been served.
