Lizzo Took The Grammys To Church With A 'Special' Medley
Everything’s coming up Lizzo at the 65th annual Grammy Awards on Sunday night (February 5), where she took the stage at “bad bitch-o'clock” for a show-stopping performance of her Grammy-nominated hit “About Damn Time” with a gospel — and “Special” — spin.
She opened her number doing what she does best: singing with perfect pitch, her unwavering voice resounding through Los Angeles’s Crypto.com Arena. “Turn up the music, turn down the lights,” she crooned, all eyes on her.
After a few lines of “About Damn Time,” she slipped into an earnest yet powerful rendition of “Special,” the feel-good tune behind, well, Special, her fourth studio album that’s also up for Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album. Like we said, it’s a big night for her!
But this is Lizzo, and she’s all about sharing the love and joy. So when her and her choir, shining bright in gold, started harmonizing her latest single’s reassuring lyrics — “in case nobody told you today, you're special” — you feel it. We may not be doctors, but we’re pretty sure it’s scientifically impossible to feel bummed while listening to Lizzo. If you haven’t already saved “Special,” we suggest doing so immediately so you can listen to it on repeat anytime you need a boost of confidence.
Speaking of confidence, Lizzo owned the Grammys red carpet in a jaw-dropping Dolce & Gabbana gown drenched in florals — a “spring awakening,” she called it on Instagram ahead of the show. She also dared to ask the question we were all wondering as the night went on: where’s Beyoncé? Thanks, Lizzo, for speaking up for the Beyhive.
