A "Just Kids" TV Series Is Happening Because Patti Smith Is Still The Coolest

Showtime will bring all the rock 'n' roll drama to life.

Patti Smith, the eternally cool "Godmother of Punk," is creating a limited TV series based on her popular memoir "Just Kids," which chronicles her relationship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Penny Dreadful" creator John Logan will produce the series for Showtime, which will be co-written and produced by Smith herself.

"A limited series on Showtime will allow us to explore the characters more deeply, enabling us to develop stories beyond the book and allow a measure of unorthodox presentation," Smith said in a statement. "The medium of a television limited series offers narrative freedom and a chance to expand upon the themes of the book."

As "Just Kids" details -- in case you haven't read, which you SHOULD -- Smith moved to New York in the late '60s and quickly fell in with the city's eclectic music scene, meeting Mapplethorpe when the pair were just a couple of starving artists sleeping on subways and park benches. The book won the 2010 National Book Award for Nonfiction, so you know the series will be fully top-notch. Still, the question remains: who will fill Patti's iconic shoes by playing her?
