'Pirates Of The Caribbean' The Flick To Beat At 2004 MTV Movie Awards

Johnny Depp-led movie leads pack with six nods.

Perhaps the only thing better than being a young, photogenic couple in love is being a grimy, deceitful and usually well-lubricated pirate ... such is the lesson to be gleaned from the nominees for this year's MTV Movie Awards.

"Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" leads the pack with six nods, including Best Movie, Best Villain, and Breakthrough Female. The film's three other nominations are due at least in some part to Johnny Depp, who landed nods for Best Male, Best Comedic Performance and Best On-Screen Team (with Orlando Bloom).

Riding on the heels of "Pirates of the Caribbean" with four nominations each are the Adam Sandler/ Drew Barrymore amnesia comedy "50 First Dates," and the super-powered sequel "X2: X-Men United." Each will vie with "Pirates" for Best Movie, along with "Finding Nemo" and the category's 12-ton elephant, "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King."

Depp and Sandler will battle Bill Murray ("Lost in Translation"), Tom Cruise ("The Last Samurai") and Jim Caviezel ("The Passion of the Christ") for Best Male Performance, while Barrymore will square off against Queen Latifah ("Bringing Down the House"), Halle Berry ("Gothika"), Uma Thurman ("Kill Bill Vol. 1") and Charlize Theron ("Monster") for Best Female Performance.

In addition to the night's big honors, some familiar Movie Awards categories return, like Best Fight, Best Kiss and Best Villain. This year, however, organizers threw in Best Dance Sequence, giving Barrymore, Ben Stiller and Seann William Scott the opportunity to duke it out with Omarion and Marques Houston.

The 2004 MTV Movie Awards airs June 10 at 9 p.m. ET.
