Hear Miley Cyrus’ Emotional New Ballad ‘Hands Of Love’

The Linda Perry-penned tune is previewed in a trailer for the upcoming gay rights drama 'Freeheld.'

Last month, Miley Cyrus surprised the hell out of everyone by surprise-dropping a trippy new album, Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz. Now, hot on the heels of that experimental release, this year’s VMA hostess is back with more fresh music (but with a decidedly less weird title).

Remember when we told you the 22-year-old was teaming up for a mystery project with former 4 Non Blondes frontwoman and songwriter extraordinaire Linda Perry? Well, that collaboration has manifested itself in “Hands of Love,” a song Perry wrote for the upcoming drama “Freeheld.” The film tells the real-life story of a lesbian couple (played by Ellen Page and Julianne Moore) who fought for same-sex rights.

In an interview with Time, Perry said she was so moved by the film that she penned the song in the car right after seeing it. But it was actually Page who suggested Cyrus for the song.

“She has a really raw, unique, awesome, beautiful voice, and Miley’s doing a lot of incredible things for the LGBTQ community,” Page told Time, referencing Cyrus’ Happy Hippie Foundation, which serves homeless and LGBTQ youth. “I just thought it was going to be a perfect fit. She and Linda made something really special. I kept listening to it after I heard it.”

For Cyrus, it was a no-brainer opportunity for her to combine her love of music with her passion for social advocacy.

“People like to learn through entertainment,” she said. “It’s an interactive way to get people to hear your message by putting it in a song they like to listen to, or a film they want to see.”

A snippet of the emotional, piano-driven ballad can be heard in the film’s trailer, which premiered on Monday (Sept. 14). The full song will be released on Oct. 2.
