Two Of Your Favorite Marvel Heroes Are Getting Married
Spoilers for "The Black Vortex Omega #1" follow!
Marvel's gearing up pretty heavily for their upcoming company-wide "Secret War" event, but that doesn't mean they don't have a few tricks up their sleeves in the meantime -- like maybe ending their latest crossover series between the X-Men and the Guardians of the Galaxy with a marriage proposal. Wait, say what now?
That's right, as of final few moments of the "Black Vortex" storyline, legendary outlaw Peter Quill (played by Chris Pratt in the Marvel movie) and phase-shifting mutant Kitty Pryde (played by Ellen Page in the 20th Century Fox films) are officially engaged. Too bad their on-screen personas will probably never get the chance to meet due to rights issues, because that would be a pretty fascinating flirtation to watch.
Not that the comics version of the couple isn't fascinating on its own -- in fact, StarKat's become a fan favorite ship since the two characters first met last year during an earlier X-Men/Guardians crossover, "The Trial of Jean Grey." They've been long-distance dating via hologram ever since, and recently Kitty's become a featured character in "The Legendary Star-Lord" series as well.
But the "Black Vortex" crossover, comic writer Sam Humphries told Comic Book Resources back in February, was always about Star-Lord and Kitty Pryde at its core underneath all the trappings of unlocking cosmic potential and fighting off the Slaughter Lords. "The love for #StarKat we've been seeing online has been blowing everyone at Marvel away," he said. "But the Black Vortex is going to put them through the wringer... their relationship is gonna be changed forever."
Well, he sure wasn't wrong.
But that doesn't mean things are all peaches and sunshine for the happy couple once "Secret War" rolls around. Though they'll be getting their own comic series called "Star-Lord & Kitty Pryde" in June, it won't be the same Kitty we just saw accept Peter's proposal -- it's actually the Kitty Pryde from the "Age of Apocalypse" storyline, says Humphries.
"Emotionally and spiritually, this is the continuation of the Peter/Kitty relationship from Legendary Star-Lord — with a couple really huge twists you won’t see coming," he told Comics Alliance. "Whatever is about to happen, Peter and Kitty won’t be able to go back to the way they were after this."
Yikes. At least no matter what happens, we'll always have this heartfelt moment between the two lovebirds to look back on, right?
