One Direction: Eight Million Votes Prove The Boys Own 'Song Of The Summer'

1D won the 2013 VMA for Best Song of the Summer, beating out Miley Cyrus.

They were the ones to beat from early on, and tonight (August 25), One Direction took home the Moonman for Best Song of the Summer at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards. The heartthrobs won the VMA for their comical video for "Best Song Ever," beating out a handful of other A-listers who were battling it out for summer song supremacy.

The fivesome looked dashing in their awards-show best as they took the stage at Brooklyn's Barclays Center to take home their prize from presenters Vampire Weekend who noted "there can only be one song of the summer."

"Wow, we want to say a massive, massive thank you to all of our fans," Harry Styles said about the win. "We know this was a voted award so thank you so, so much to everyone who voted. It means very much a lot to us. This is the director of our video. It was his idea, Ben Winston, so thank you to him." (Winston joined the boys onstage.)

"What Harry said," Louis Tomlinson added.

Liam Payne then said, "We can't believe the things our fans have done for us in the past three years so thank you so, so much. Our movie ['This Is Us'] comes out next weekend and this Moonman tops it all off. This one's for you guys. Thank you so much everybody."

The win brings 1D's career total to four Moonmen. The guys of One Direction won over the likes of Daft Punk ("Get Lucky"), Calvin Harris featuring Ellie Goulding ("I Need Your Love"), Robin Thicke ("Blurred Lines"), Selena Gomez ("Come & Get It") and Miley Cyrus ("We Can't Stop).

They were voted to victory by their loyal Directioners, even while the Smilers tried their hardest to give Miley the title. (Heck, even Miley knew she didn't have a chance.) So how many votes did 1D end up with by show time? Well, a whopping 8,676,163 votes, putting them at 4,557, 315 million more than Miley.

The guys of 1D released their Ben Winston-directed video for "Best Song Ever" back in July, providing fans a sneak peek at their August 30 movie release and the band a chance to show off their acting chops. In the clip, they each don disguises, playing various Hollywood movers and shakers trying to pitch the boy band various marketing ideas for their Morgan Spurlock-directed 3-D documentary. In the end, those ideas are too silly and the guys just run amok.

1D was one of the many folks who attended the VMAs, which took over Brooklyn's Barclays Center and featured performances from Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Miley and more.
