'Awkward' Star Nikki DeLoach Has Parenting Advice For Her Onscreen Alter Ego

Find out what the actress behind Lacey Hamilton really thinks of 'Carefrontation' letters.

Motherhood: a sacred privilege that centers on supporting your children, offering them guidance and trying your best not to call them pussies who will never amount to anything.

Way back on Season 1 of Awkward, Lacey Hamilton proved intention is only half the battle when she sent her daughter Jenna a scathing, anonymous letter in an attempt to snap Jenna out of a funk. But in a recent interview with MTV News, Nikki DeLoach, who plays Lacey, said she’d advise all mothers against following suit and, instead, consider Lacey’s poison pen a cautionary tale.

“First, if you feel compelled to sit down and write a Carefrontation letter, probably you should avoid that,” DeLoach says in the video above. “It does not end well. Your daughter [or] son will end up hating you.”

And yes, for a good bulk of Season 2, Jenna and Lacey did not talk. Ultimately, though, when Jenna understood her mother’s noble purpose, she extended forgiveness, and Lacey has since demonstrated how compassionate she can be -- independently of the seriously (remarkably, shockingly) bad judgment.

“[Lacey] makes a lot of mistakes," DeLoach says, "but she loves her child more than anything else in the world, and as a mom in real life, you make mistakes, and you’re gonna trip and fall.”
