Early this morning, one brave woman took the fight against the Confederate flag into her own hands -- literally.

Bree Newsome, a filmmaker, musician, and activist from North Carolina, arrived at the State House in Columbia, SC, equipped with climbing gear. She then proceeded to scale the 30-foot flagpole on the State House lawn and remove the Confederate flag.

"You come against me with hatred and oppression and violence," she said, flag in hand, from the top of the pole. "I come against you in the name of God. This flag comes down today."

Activists have recently rallied against the flying of the Confederate flag after nine black people were shot and killed by a white gunman in a historically black church in Charleston, SC.

According to Fusion, Newsome and fellow activist James Ian Dyson acted together on behalf of a group of "concerned citizens."

"The flag we removed is one of the most familiar remnants of white supremacy that supports the idea that there is still a reigning group of individuals who control our freedom, while tacitly supporting white Americans when they commit heinous and racially charged hate crimes against Blacks and People of Color," the group wrote in an email statement to Fusion. "We took this task in our own hands because [our] President, Governor, mayors, legislators, and councilmen had a moral duty to remove the flag but failed to act. We could not sit by and watch the victims of the Charleston Massacre be laid to rest while the inspiration for their deaths [continues] to fly above their caskets."

Newsome has been arrested following her act of civil disobedience. The hashtag #FreeBree is currently being used on Twitter in support.
