Emo-rockers the Get Up Kids and punk outfit Face to Face will each headline late-summer tours sponsored by controversial MP3-trading software makers Napster Inc.

The tours are Napster's second venture into tour sponsorship. This summer, as it battled copyright-infringement lawsuits filed by the Recording Industry Association of America, Metallica and Dr. Dre, Napster fronted $1.8 million to sponsor a free tour headlined by Limp Bizkit with guests Cypress Hill.

For its latest round of live shows, Napster has chosen to focus on emerging artists. The two outings, which include a combined 70 performances, will not be free, according to a Napster spokesperson.

Unlike the major labels, indie imprint Vagrant Records — which has issued releases from the Get Up Kids, Face to Face and the opening acts on both bands' tours — is happy to see its artists' work distributed via Napster, according to Vagrant co-owner Rich Egan.

"Based on the number of e-mails we get from fans saying they first discovered our bands on Napster, there isn't a doubt that Napster has driven more people into stores than it's kept away," Egan said in a statement Monday (Aug. 14). "All of our releases have ended up on Napster. What am I going to do, tell 20 million people to stop listening?"

Chuck D, Courtney Love and Prince have all spoken out in favor of Napster, which came close to shutting down last month after a judge ordered that copyrighted material be removed from its network. An appeals court granted a last-minute stay, and the file-sharing service remains operational.

Southern California punks Face to Face, who released Reactionary June 29, will launch their tour Aug. 23 in San Diego. They'll be joined by openers Alkaline Trio and Saves the Day beginning Aug. 26 in West Hollywood, Calif.

For Reactionary, the quartet allowed fans to vote online to decide which songs to include. After receiving more than 2 million votes, according to Beyond Records spokesperson Ashley Smith, the group whittled down the final LP track listing from 16 tracks to a dozen classic-style punk songs, including "Out of Focus" and "Hollow" (RealAudio excerpt).

The Get Up Kids, hailing from Kansas City, Mo., have toured extensively since the release of Something To Write Home About late last year. The group's hook-filled rock ranges from the punchy "Ten Minutes" (RealAudio excerpt) to the ballad "Out of Reach."

Opening throughout the quintet's latest trek, which kicks off Sept. 1 in Lawrence, Kan., will be the Anniversary and Koufax.
