Oasis Singer Liam Gallagher Arrested For Attacking Photographer

Journalist claims notoriously temperamental singer broke his camera and stole his film.

LONDON -- Liam Gallagher, lead singer for the British pop-rock band Oasis, was arrested Wednesday (Nov. 4) afternoon for allegedly damaging a photographer's camera after the journalist tried to take his photo, according to police at Scotland Yard.

Freelance photographer Mel Bouzad was quoted by Reuters news agency as saying he spotted the singer outside the Pembroke Castle pub in North London.

"I approached him to take a picture, and he turned aggressive," Bouzard said. "A scuffle broke out. He broke my camera lens and stole a film."

According to police, a 26-year-old man was arrested after the fight on suspicion of criminal damage to a camera and brought to London's Kentish Town police station for questioning.

"We would describe him as '26-year-old man,' but you made a good guess with the name," a police spokesperson, who would not identify himself, responded when asked if one of the two combatants was Liam Gallagher.

Gallagher was released on bail without being charged and is scheduled to appear again in approximately a month, though no exact date has been set. Police will decide what, if any, charges to press at that time.

It's the second time this year that the Oasis singer has grappled with someone who tried to take his picture. Last March, during the band's tour of Australia, a 19-year-old British fan, Benjamin Russell Jones, alleged that Gallagher head-butted him. Jones opted not to press criminal charges but to seek damages in British civil courts.

Oasis have just released a collection of B-sides, The Masterplan, which includes the single "Acquiesce" (RealAudio excerpt).

Earlier this week, equally irascible singer Ian Brown, formerly of the Stone Roses (long cited as an influence by Oasis), began serving a four-month sentence for an altercation aboard a British Airways flight. He was forced to cancel the tour in support of Unfinished Monkey Business, his solo debut album.

Oasis are currently between albums following the release of their third record, Be Here Now, and a tour of the U.S. and Europe. Lead guitarist and Oasis mastermind Noel Gallagher, Liam's brother, is said to be working on new songs for the band's next record.
