Lady Gaga premiered the much-anticipated video for her latest hit single, “The Edge of Glory,” last night on So You Think You Can Dance. In the clip, Gaga dances on fire escapes and down a foggy city street while Clarence Clemons wails on his saxophone, but the minimalist-for-Gaga video – and the Twitter storm that followed its premiere – has left fans wondering if some behind-the-scene drama resulted in a different clip than Gaga and her creative team originally intended.

Following the premiere, Joseph Kahn, who was widely reported to be the video’s director, took to Twitter to deny he helmed the video, saying, “I did NOT direct Lady Gaga’s ‘Edge of Glory’ video. Lady Gaga did.” He even clarified that he did not co-direct the clip with her, adding, “No, I don’t co-direct. One canvas, one paintbrush.” Note: Gaga and Kahn did not respond to MTV News for comment.

Gaga previously announced that Kahn was the man lensing the video. Responding to a fan questioning why she reported false news, Lady G’s creative director, Laurieann Gibson, tweeted, “sorry guys there was a slight turn of events on set.” When another fan accused her of lying following Kahn’s tweet, Gibson responded, “listen u disrespectful f**k they had an issue on set I don't lie!!!!!”

Beyond the accusations of creative differences, images from the set of the video Kahn was allegedly working on have surfaced and reveal a very different concept from the final product. In one image, a steel surgical table sits bathed in lights, while two other images show a brightly lit subway terminal.

On a recent red carpet, Gibson was asked what she could reveal about “The Edge of Glory” concept and said, “We’ll be feeling very fishy.” Gibson’s comment seemed to confirm fan rumors that the video would have a mermaid motif similar to her performance of the song at Le Grand Journal.
