When the credits rolled on "22 Jump Street" last year, the message seemed to be clear: no more damn sequels. The movie, a follow-up to 2012's "21 Jump Street," was laced with wink-wink nudge-nudge jokes about retreading old material in the form of sequels and reboots, and ended with a tour de force of stars Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill fulfilling various "missions." Medical school, a semester at sea, culinary school -- you get the idea.

So when it was announced that there would indeed be a "23 Jump Street" movie, movie lovers met the news with eyebrows raised high. How will directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller make another worthwhile sequel after all but swearing not to continue the franchise? Or, perhaps a better question: will they direct at all?

In an interview with the New York Times about the first episode of TV's "The Last Man on Earth," which the duo directed, Lord and Miller gave a few tantalizing hints about the upcoming movie.

"Rodney Rothman is off writing a script," Lord said. "He had a really outrageous idea for what to do, and how we could take our scorched-earth sequel policy from the end of '22 Jump Street' and do something that hadn’t been explored in those 22 sequels and simultaneously tell the next chapter in the story."

Could that be the potential "Jump Street"/"Men in Black" crossover we learned about in the hacked Sony emails late last year? That certainly fits the bill of "outrageous," and we don't remember seeing any memory-flasher sticks in those end credits.

Lord also held off on confirming whether he and Miller will helm the threequel, or whether they'll continue on solely as producers.

"We don’t know what the future is going to bring in terms of that, but we are definitely involved, and certainly part of the producing team," he said. "We’re really excited about the movie and will be a big part in bringing it in front of audiences."

So...aliens? Guys?
