The Real-Life 'Foxcatcher' Inspiration Really Hated 'Foxcatcher'

'Everything I've ever said positive about the movie I take back. I hate it.'

Critics loved "Foxcatcher," the Channing Tatum-starring movie based on the true story of Olympic wrestler Mark Schultz and his brother, a story that ultimately ends in tragedy.

While the tastemakers of the movie industry may have been all about "Foxcatcher," the real-life Schultz is not. The athlete, now 54 years old, slammed the movie on Twitter.

In a New Year's Eve Twitter spree that has since been deleted, Schultz allegedly trashed the film, saying, "I hate it."

In screengrabs captured by Huffington Post, tweets from Schultz's account read, "I HATE BENNETT MILLER," the film's director. Another read: "Everything I've ever said positive about the movie I take back. I hate it. I hate it. I hate it. I hate it. I hate it. I hate it. I hate it."

On a Facebook account attributed to him, Schultz shared another lengthy post with his criticisms of the movie:

"The movie doesn't show hardly any of my victories," it reads in part. "It focuses on my losses. The personalities and relationships between the characters in the film are primarily fiction and, although Channing is outstanding, the personality is not accurate. However, I think Channing played me the only way it was possible to play me due to the confines of the director's vision."

On his official fan page on Facebook, Schultz clarified his comments, apologizing for his "harsh language."

"While I may have tweeted out of anger, I in no way regret standing up for myself, nor do I regret calling out the only other man who has had decision making power concerning my image and legacy these past year," he wrote.

Schultz, alongside writer David Thomas, recently released a book, also entitled "Foxcatcher." His latest tweets have encouraged fans to read the book, but another Facebook post on his fan page also seems to distance Schultz from it.

"Keep this in mind," he wrote. "The story is mine but I didn't write the final version of the book ‪#‎Foxcatcher‬."
