Daniel Radcliffe Has The Sweetest Reason For Skipping 'Harry Potter And The Cursed Child'

'It would be a weird one'

After donning Harry Potter’s robe for an entire decade, you’d think Daniel Radcliffe would be keen to watch his lightning bolt–scarred on-screen counterpart come to life onstage. But when Harry Potter and the Cursed Child opens in London next month, don’t expect to see Radcliffe in the audience — he’s “not sure” if he’ll make the trip.

Don’t worry, Potterheads — Radcliffe’s decision isn’t motivated by contempt or indifference. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. At the premiere of his new film Now You See Me 2 on Tuesday, the actor told E! News that he simply doesn’t want to steal the spotlight from the production.

“It would be a weird one,” he admitted. “I could be completely wrong in this, but I feel like if I went to see it that night, there's going to be a lot of Harry Potter fans there in the audience obviously and would that then become a thing? Would it be more about them watching me watch the show or would it take away from the show? I would never want to do anything that would distract or take away from the show.”

He added, “I don't know. I'm busy doing a play here at the moment, but I'm not sure.”

Admit it: That’s some damn good reasoning on Radcliffe’s part, and a very considerate approach to what would surely become a highly publicized appearance. He’s right — there’s no way his presence at the play would go unnoticed or unscrutinized. Still, he HAS to be curious about the eighth installment of the Potter series, so might we suggest he show up in disguise? Surely he has an “in” with dozens of prosthetics professionals ... unless Ralph Fiennes’s nose really looks like Voldemort’s IRL.
