12 Monkey Movies To Fill The Agonizing Wait Until 'Planet Of The Apes 3'

Feast your eyes on these damn dirty apes.

Try not to go ape-ass crazy when you hear this news: the next installment in the "Planet of the Apes" franchise has officially been delayed. After initial promises of a summer 2016 release, Fox announced that the as-yet-untitled film has been pushed back a full year, to July 14, 2017.

This is disappointing news for fans of the "Apes" films, who will have to wait three anguishing years for a new movie about Caesar and his fellow simians and their long-anticipated coup of the earth -- although it also gives rise to some interesting questions about whether the studio might be taking this extra time for a reason. Like, say, planning a life for the franchise beyond its initial three-film span, which is a possibility that Andy Serkis also teased the last time we chatted with him.

But in the meantime, there's no shortage of cinematic monkeys to fill the void in your heart/life left by the delay. Below, we've rounded up a few good options to queue up when you're in the mood for apes.

"Planet of the Apes", the original franchise

These five films, beginning with 1968's "Planet of the Apes," belong on your list -- if only so you can marvel at the sheer volume of Charlton Heston's over-acting.

"Planet of the Apes", the first reboot

For that matter, don't miss the 2001 Tim Burton remake of "Planet of the Apes" -- if only so you can marvel at how Tim Roth in ape prosthetics still looks just like Tim Roth.

"2001: A Space Odyssey"

The apes only enter this picture at the very beginning, but when they do, it's smashing.

"Night at the Museum"

All three movies in this franchise feature the antics of that naughty capuchin monkey, and the last one is even still in theaters, which means that you could even get a big-screen ape fix if you so desired.

"Mighty Joe Young"

Featuring a love triangle between Charlize Theron, a giant gorilla named Joe, and a small homo sapien played by Bill Paxton. Which one will she choose?!

It's not that "Monkeybone" is a good movie; it's just that, y'know, it has a monkey in it.

Hyperintelligent gorillas in a Michael Crichton-inspired thriller.

"Curious George"

Lovable scamp George and his yellow-hatted manfriend team up for an adventure, with the usual results.

"The Wizard of Oz"

As evolved as Caesar and his fellow apes are, they still haven't managed to grow wings like the monkeys of Oz.

"Monkey Trouble"

Baby Thora Birch is the custodian of a kleptomaniac monkey in this blast from the past.

"Twelve Monkeys"

Okay, so there aren't actually any monkeys in this movie. But there is Brad Pitt, making this face, which is basically the same thing.

"King Kong"

The ape who started it all in Hollywood, no list of movie monkeys would be complete without the King.
