These Movie Title Typo Drawings Are So Damn Awesome
What would happen if you removed a letter from your favorite movie titles? Well, you'd get such non-classic works as "Rave," a Pixar-animated film about a Scottish lass with an affinity for glowsticks, and "Harry Otter," wherein a young boy discovers he's a wizard. And also an otter.
After seeing such a thread of misspelled movie titles on Reddit, artist Austin Light set out to bring those hypothetical pictures to life.
"I wanted to participate in InkTober, the [sketch-a-day] event started by artist Jake Parker," the 30-year-old copywriter by day/illustrator by night told MTV News over email on Monday (November 3). "A coworker showed me the Reddit thread of movie title typos and I thought it would be fun to draw one. I had so much fun with the first one, I decided to keep going. Then it just snowballed from there."
"Day 4: Finding Emo -- An insufferable teenage fish runs away from home. His father contemplates searching for him."
"Day 8: Harry Otter -- A young boy finds out who, and what, he is. Magic ensues."
"Day 17: Beauty And The Beat -- After a witch turns her best friend into a dope boom box, Belle decides to enter France's Got Talent. She crushes it."
"I posted them each day to Instagram," Light said, "and at the end of the month, that same guy who showed me the original post (thanks Ed!) told me I should put them in a gallery on Reddit."
Within an hour of sharing his collection of 31 drawings -- which parody everything from "Jurassic Park" and "Twilight" to "Star Wars" and "Pulp Fiction" -- Austin's post had reached the front page of Reddit.
So, how does it feel to be Internet-famous?
"Bonkers," Light explained. "I have people exploding my inbox, folks at work patting me on the back and then my mother-in-law saying, 'I heard you're doing good on Reedzit?' It's exciting, surreal, validating and extremely flattering."
"Day 5: Jurassic Par -- Two dinosaurs set out to prove they're more than just killing machines. Thanks to a loophole in the rules they find a spot on the PGA tour and golf their way to the top of the food chain."
"Day 19: The Princess Ride -- After years apart two lovers are reunited, only to discover neither loves what the other has become. Produced by Adam Sandler."
"Day 26: Twilight: New Moo -- A young man tries to win a girl's heart with his new found bovine transformation skill. It doesn't go his way."
Speaking of family, Light did the impossible with his 31st and final drawing: He turned a riff on the Spartan action epic "300" into a super-heartfelt thank you to his wife and two sons.
"Day 31: 30 -- The story of how one man, with the help of a mega amazing wife, gets serious about his art career in his fourth decade, while also rocking the hell out of being a dad."
