'Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation': Has Ethan Hunt Finally Met His Equal?

With reporting by Josh Horowitz

Ethan Hunt, hero of the "Mission: Impossible" franchise, is unbeatable...or is he?

In the latest installment of the movies, "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation," Ethan (Tom Cruise) is matched against Ilsa (Rebecca Ferguson), who proves to be almost more than he can take.

Chris McQuarrie, who wrote and directed the film, told MTV News that he absolutely meant for Ilsa to be a non-sexual match-up for Ethan.

"Creating a female equal for Ethan was job one," he said. "What I wanted to do was bring someone in from the outside who didn't answer Ethan and who created more of a challenge for Ethan."

Mission: accomplished.

Ferguson, for her part, also said that she loved that the tension between Ethan and Ilsa wasn't necessarily romantic.

"They haven't highlighted once her sexuality, her femininity," she said. "They're talking about an undercover agent where Ethan meets his match, where she meets her match, equally. Where she can kick ass. We talk about vulnerability and mysteriousness. She's kind of ruthless."

"Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation" is in theaters now.
