Andrej Pejic Joins Sofia Coppola's 'The Little Mermaid': Who Will She Play?
Androgynous model Andrej Pejic has nabbed her first official film role, and it's a biggun.
According to The Daily Mail, Pejic will portray one of Ariel's sisters (No. 4, apparently) in Sofia Coppola's live-action adaptation of the Disney classic/Hans Christian Anderson tale, “The Little Mermaid.” Ooh! Unexpected in the best way. We like it, you guys. We like it a lot.
The model, who gained notoriety for her own gender fluidity — Pejic was born male but prefers female pronouns and doesn't have any intentions to undergo surgery to make her sex and gender line up — is the only person currently attached to the film, but it certainly speaks to Coppola's exciting change-up and vision surrounding the project.
If we're being honest, Pejic's casting is sort of a game-changer as to what's possible when it comes to the film's remake. Can we get Tilda Swinton and David Bowie to play Pejic and starring-mermaid Ariel's parents? (We know, we know — Ariel's mother is dead in the film but hey, creative license is a thing!) Maybe Cara Delevingne or Emma Watson as Ariel? RuPaul as Ursula? Pretty, pretty please?
Pejic's casting really opens up the floodgates of possibility in an exciting, modern way — who would you cast alongside her in the flick?
