6 Reasons We Need Robert Downey, Jr. Back As Sherlock Holmes

All he needs is a good script.

Although there's been plenty of good news this year for fans of Sherlock Holmes (hellooooo, Benedict Cumberbatch in a Victorian-themed "Sherlock" holiday special!), there's also been plenty of frustration on one front: Namely, nary a peep about the long-awaited threequel to the film series starring Robert Downey, Jr.

But now, after languishing for way too long in no-news-ville, a new movie is definitely on the radar, if not exactly a sure thing.

In an interview with IGN, producer Lionel Wigram revealed that everyone is game to go back to 221B Baker Street -- just as soon as he and his friends can write a worthy script.

"We’re working on a Sherlock Holmes 3 script," he said. "I think we would all love to do one if we could come up with something that really was really going to knock it out of the park and was going to be the best of the three. So we’re working on that – it’s quite hard to do."

Hard, but ohmigod, so worth it. Even with the BBC's "Sherlock" to look forward to, the chance to see Robert Downey, Jr. reprise the role of Holmes is just too good to give up on. Here's why we can't wait for him to deduce us onscreen again.

His take on the character is (ahem) starkly different.

It's like watching Robert Downey, Jr. playing Iron Man playing Sherlock Holmes.

He's our own, American, Holmes.

Which makes his ability to drop Brit-icisms in that accent even more delightful.

Where RDJ plays Sherlock, Jude Law will be Watson.

The only thing better than more Sherlock Holmes is more Sherlock and Watson spatting like teenage sisters.

His Holmes is just a little bit bawdy.

Two words: Sherlock, shredded.

We love the Cumberbatch and everything, but as shirtless Sherlocks go, nobody beats Robert Downey, Jr. in fight club condition.

And c'mon: We have to know how he survived Reichenbach.

This cliffhanger has hung for far too long. Answers, please!
