'Transformers,' 'Ice Age' Tied For Holiday Weekend Box Office Crown

'Public Enemies' debuts in third, with 'Proposal' and 'Hangover' rounding out top five.

The Box-Office Top Five

#1 "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" ($42.5 million)

#2 "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" ($42.5 million)

#3 "Public Enemies" ($26.2 million)

#4 "The Proposal" ($12.8 million)

#5 "The Hangover" ($10.4 million)

The holiday weekend ends with the rarity of two films claiming the #1 spot and holding their breath for a Monday morning (July 6) recount. [movie id="369059"]"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen"[/movie] and 3-D toon [movie id="349031"]"Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs"[/movie] both earned an estimated $42.5 million over the Fourth of July weekend, though neither blockbuster could compete with fireworks and barbecues on the holiday itself. Though the box office enjoyed brisk sales to the tune of $152.9 million on Friday and Sunday, ticket sales took a steep nosedive on Saturday.

With a gross of $293 million and counting, "Transformers" has hardly underperformed at the box office, but its $42.5 million holiday haul was more modest than analysts expected. The Paramount spectacle has become the highest-grossing movie of the summer so far, a fact that only [movie id="307087"]"Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,"[/movie] due out July 15, may be able to change.

"Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" did its best to freeze out Optimus Prime. The third installment of the popular "Ice Age" animated series opened wide on Wednesday and has gathered a total of $67.5 million in five days. Though it didn't break any domestic Disney/ Pixar records or do as well as its frozen predecessors, its $148 million international debut is the biggest an animated film has ever enjoyed.

Not to be outdone, [movie id="375622"]"Public Enemies"[/movie] held up a few theaters to earn $26.2 million, giving it a five-day gross of $41 million. That's solid business for a movie that, although it boasts [movieperson id="16504"]Johnny Depp[/movieperson] in a starring role, lacks CG effects and a massive fanbase. "Fans of the adult film can rejoice," Universal marketing executive Adam Fogelson said. "In the midst of all this lovely, wonderful pure popcorn fare, there is an audience for what is not only an entertaining movie but also has higher artistic aspirations."

With [movie id="215355"]"My Sister's Keeper"[/movie] falling to #7 in its sophomore week, the rest of the top five was rounded out by familiar and funny faces. While [movie id="351156"]"Up"[/movie] finally soared off the top five, [movie id="349900"]"The Proposal"[/movie] has continued to hear wedding bells, taking in another $12.8 million over the weekend, with a gross of $94.2 million in the bank so far. [movie id="369201"]"The Hangover"[/movie] also kept on partying with $10.4 million and finally became the fourth film of the summer to cross into $200 million territory with a gross of $204 million.
