"Lyricist Lounge" Recounts New York Rap Haven

The Lyricist Lounge, a haven for aspiring rappers in New York City since 1991, has put together a compilation album that arrived in stores this week.

The late Notorious B.I.G. [Live, 500k QuickTime] and Foxy Brown [Live, 400k QuickTime] are among the rap stars who performed at the Lounge early in their careers, and while you won't find either artist on the new album, such notables as Zack de la Rocha of Rage Against the Machine, the Roots' Black Thought, Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest and rising star Mos Def do appear on "Lyricist Lounge, Volume 1.

Def and Tip are featured on the first single and video off the record, entitled [article id="1449570"]"Body Rock" [625k QuickTime][/article]. Def also appears with Talib Kweli on "Definition," a bonus track from the duo that's not on the new album, but is available on a flexi-disc in the spring issue

of "Stress" magazine.
