YOU WANT YOUR MTV, AND PARAMOUNT+ HAS IT

Madonna, Eminem Lead American Romp Through EMAs

Led by two of Michigan's finest — Madonna and Eminem — American artists dominated the 2000 MTV Europe Music Awards on Thursday.

U.S. acts snapped up 10 of the evening's 12 major awards at the ceremony, which was held at the Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden.

Madonna and Eminem each won a pair of EMAs, with Madonna taking Best Dance and Best Female honors, while the "Slim Shady" rapper was named Best Hip-Hop act and his newest record, The Marshall Mathers LP, was selected as the year's best album.

Eminem was unable to attend the MTV Europe Music Awards due to his U.S. road commitment to the Anger Management Tour, but he did accept his two awards via several taped messages.

I worked long and hard to get this award," a pre-recorded Eminem said after winning the Best Hip-Hop nod, "and I finally got it. I can't tell you what this award means to me, so thank you. This is beautiful."

After receiving the Best Album award,

Eminem donned a Will Smith mask and apologized for not being able to attend the show. He then removed the disguise and simply shook his head, commenting, "Wow, I beat out Bon Jovi."

Eminem can now lay claim to being the year's most-honored-by-MTV artist, as he won three Moonmen during the MTV Video Music Awards at New York's Radio City Music Hall in September. He tied 'NSYNC for the most wins that evening.

Following her Best Dance win, Madonna offered a "big up to the Swedes in the house" as a way of acknowledging Jonas Akerlund, who directed the video for [article id="1452014"]"Music" [RealVideo][/article] as well as her "Ray of Light" [RealVideo] clip. "We've worked together before," she said of Akerlund, "and he's brilliant and original and I love him."

Overall, it was a good evening for EMA performers, as Madonna, Williams, the Backstreet Boys, Jennifer Lopez, Ricky Martin, Moby,

Guano Apes and the Bomfunk MCs all won awards in addition to taking to the stage.

For her one-song set, Lopez — the night's Best R&B award-winner — arrived on the stage in fly-girl fashion via a "prop" plane to pop and lock her way through the global premiere of "Love Don't Cost a Thing," the lead single from her forthcoming J.Lo album.

Only the Spice Girls, U2 and Ronan Keating both performed and walked away empty-handed from the EMAs, although U2, who kicked off the show with a live rendition of "Beautiful Day," and the Spice Girls weren't nominated.

The Spice Girls' Melanie C, however, did lose out in the Best New Act category to Blink-182, who sent three diminutive stand-ins to accept the honor on their behalf.

In addition to the music-related honors, an EMA Free Your Mind Award was presented to OTPOR, a resistance movement founded by Serbian students at Belgrade University in 1998 to oppose Yugoslavian President Slobodan Milosevic.

The ceremony will be broadcast November 20 at 8:00 p.m. (ET) on MTV.
