'Spongebob Squarepants' Is Now A Broadway Musical

From Bikini Bottom to the Great White Way.

From a pineapple under the sea to the bright lights of the Broadway stage: Spongebob Squarepants is really going places.

After making his feature film debut earlier this year, Spongebob is now venturing into the world of live theater, with a musical that will debut at Chicago's Oriental Theater in the summer of 2016.

Details on the plotline are scant, but the roster of musicians who will be contributing songs to its book is both robust and amazing, according to EW: Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, Jonathon Coulton, Dirty Projectors, The Flaming Lips, John Legend, Lady Antebellum, Cyndi Lauper, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants, and David Bowie.

Even knowing nothing else, there's no question that this musical will be a mind-blowing work of surreal undersea awesomeness.

Meanwhile, Spongebob isn't the first pop cultural icon to make the jump to Broadway -- and he shouldn't be the last! Here are a few more TV characters who deserve a turn on the stage.

The Powerpuff Girls

A "Powerpuff" musical would have all the girl-power fun of "Legally Blonde," with the death-defying wirework of "Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark," all buoyed by a wave of buzz for the show's much-discussed 2016 reboot.

The Simpsons

Not only is there plenty of musical material already written thanks to the show's many musical episodes, a production as big as "The Simpsons: The Musical" would give much-needed work to a ton of hungry young actors.

The Iron Giant

We know Vin Diesel is dying to play everyone's favorite robot BFF again, but with a feature film sequel officially ruled out, an "Iron Giant" musical might be his best hope -- and also just the best, period.

Bob's Burgers

Tina Belcher's adolescent angst as a musical theater power ballad? Yes, please!
