Zayn Malik Is Producing A TV Drama Inspired By One Direction

Will he spill all the 1D tea?

Harry Styles isn’t the only One Directioner to take his talents to Hollywood. The Dunkirk star’s former bandmate Zayn Malik has decided to take the story of his life to the small screen for a 1D-inspired drama.

Zayn and veteran producer Dick Wolf (Law & Order: SVU, Chicago Fire) have teamed up to develop a fictionalized series called Boys about the formation and rise of a boy band (hmmm... sound familiar?). According to The Hollywood Reporter, the hourlong drama “captures all the excitement, competition and fun, but also takes an inside look into the pressure that come with the success.”

That “pressure” is something Zayn’s acutely familiar with. He’s long cited his desires for privacy, artistic freedom, and normalcy as reasons he left One Direction in March 2015 to pursue a solo career. In a statement, Zayn said, “Dick Wolf is a legend, and the opportunity to work with him and NBC to create a compelling drama series is awesome.”

NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke added, “Zayn certainly brings an authentic point of view to this world where kids are catapulted into fame at a dizzying speed. On top of our excitement around the creative ideas being discussed, we have a lot of respect for the musical and digital ambitions behind the project.”

According to THR, a component of those “ambitions” will be the show’s use of original music, which has worked well for other musically focused dramas like Empire and Nashville. No word yet on whether Zayn will be involved in Boys’ music — or how much input he’ll have with the show in general — but suffice it to say, this is a project worth looking out for.
